Winter term 2021/22

  • Abstract

How do I get to the doctor, to the grocery store or to an appointment? This question is central in rural areas, especially for young people without a driver's license and older people who no longer want to or can not drive themselves anymore.

In this presentation, we will give insights into the various research priorities for achieving smart public transport.

  • Abstract

Enterprise IT contributes significantly to the world’s carbon footprint. While the planet is heating up, the sustainable transformation of enterprise IT is still in its infancy.

In this talk, we will introduce strategies, practical approaches and use cases for transforming and measuring sustainability in IT.

  • Abstract

Process Mining (PM) is an application-oriented discipline that provides data-driven approaches to improve business processes. It connects model-based process analysis and data-oriented analysis techniques.

PM algorithms allow to discover, monitor, and improve real processes by extracting knowledge from the event logs available in information systems. Machine Learning (ML) can support PM in several ways: boosting pre-processing procedures, handing variant analysis, and discovering potential cause-effect relationships, and others.

The talk proposes an introduction on PM and presents some of the challenges the discipline is today dressing.

  • Abstract

In this talk we will examine key factors of successful CIOs in large German companies. The results from 60 interviews with successful German top CIOs, who primarily have an above-average length of tenure, reveal various building blocks for success: The basic prerequisite is always to ensure secure and efficient IT operations. Through effective and innovative change projects, the CIOs interviewed make IT added value transparent and act as bridge builders between IT and business departments. In this way, they have a positive impact on the corporate culture and establish IT as a success factor in the business units in the long term. The CIOs themselves are not "techies", but are characterized by a high level of leadership and business expertise coupled with visionary thinking. As a result, they are able to position IT in a growth-oriented manner and anticipate requirements and potential for and from the business units at an early stage. The future development of the CIO organization and the paradigms in IT, on the other hand, is sometimes discussed controversially by the study participants - for example, there is still no uniform opinion on the assessment of the meaningfulness and relevance of the CDO position.

  • Abstract

Developing quality software for highly connected embedded systems is quite challenging and the resulting software is usually quite complex. It is not always possible to handle this complexity appropriate and develop such systems without fatal bugs in the system. To handle this problem, a structural approach proved to be quite useful: Formal specification and verification. TLA+ allows to develop formal specifications for systems with just using simple propositional logic. One big advantage of specifying a complex system using TLA+ is that using model checking, we can determine if certain properties hold for this system in each state.

In this colloquium, we will show you how we at BMW are using TLA+ and model checking to improve the vehicle-access software of our central electronical control unit. Therefore we will report you from our experiences. We will also show you opportunities, how you may yourself can start as a software developer at BMW and/or become yourself part of the model checking community.

This talk gives a tour de force through the life of a data science consultant, touching upon all relevant questions aspiring data scientists might have:
How do data science projects look like in practice?
What research questions, methodologies and technologies are driving the industry?
How can I break into the industry and what do hiring managers look for?
